Various kinds of binoculars

There are three different types of binoculars: roof prism, porro prism, and monoculars. As you can see, the main difference is in the prism. The lens at the front of the binoculars flips the image upside down. The prism corrects this and returns the image to its upright position. Binoculars with a roof prism have lenses and prisms that are aligned behind each other, keeping the binoculars compact in size. Because of internal focus, these binoculars are less susceptible to dust and moisture.

Binoculars with porro prisms and monoculars

Binoculars with porro prisms have lenses and prisms that are shifted relative to each other. As a result, the housing is wider. Binoculars with porro prisms offer a little more depth perception. Because binoculars with porro prisms often have an external focusing mechanism, they are more sensitive to dust and moisture. Binoculars with one ocular and lens are called monoculars. These types of binoculars are more compact and lighter.
