Cognisys Stack Shot Macro Rail Package

This package includes everything you will need for a complete setup with exception of the camera specific shutter cable. The shutter cable is the communication link between the camera and StackShot. It allows the image capturing process to be completely automated.

The other option for controlling the camera is the Universal IR remote. Use this option if you don't want to deal with the wires running to your camera or if your camera is not equipped with a wired shutter release port.

The StackShot rail is a completely configurable automated system for capturing images for stacking. The step size can be configured from 100mm (the overall length of the rail) to a very minuscule 0.01mm.

The StackShot macro rail package includes

  • StackShot Controller - USB enabled
  • StackShot macro rail
  • 6ft (2m) long motor cable
  • AC adapter (UK)

Nick - 2/3/2017 Total rip off price, a good cnc stacking table can be made for £100-150 easily which will do the job, each single step can easily be achieved to 0.00198 mm !!!!
Does the job very well

rustbucket - 8/14/2016 Having manually stacked photographs over the last 12 months this piece of kit takes all the hard work out of the job. I also use Helicon but this is camera based for stacking whereas stackshot allows me to raise/lower the subject instead(instead of raising/lowering camera). Brilliant bit of kit.

el48tel - 5/27/2016 The design of this product is excellent. The fabrication of the macro rail drive is first rate. The box of electronics is basic but fit for purpose. The software which drives the kit has a front end (UI) which may be suitable for the team which designed it, but leaves much to be desired; it looks like a prototype rather than a product for sale (if you want a more programmable kit you may need the more expensive 3X rail which has a downloadable extension program); it took me considerable time with and without the handbook to understand the steps to be followed. The handbook is supplied on disc/download and at the price of the kit I would consider it an insult to the purchaser not to offer a paper copy. There is work to be done on this set of instructions to make them much more user friendly. The camera shutter connection lead is not supplied and is an expensive extra; if your camera has IR shutter capability you may need to consider this as an alternative for two reasons; first, the shutter release cable is very short in comparison to the supplied motor drive cable (yes guys at Cognisys the camera and motor sit side by side so the cables need to be of similar length) and second the IR release is of similar price to the wired cable releases. To equalise the cable release length you'll need an RCA single extension cable.
Having said all of that, once I'd understood all of its foibles and made a few mistakes, it delivered the goods. A "WOW" was given by all who saw my first "proper" stacked macro. I used Photoshop for the stacking rather than the two offered 30 day trial packages (again Cognisys at this price I'm sure with a little more effort you could have secured a longer licence arrangement). I think an understanding of focus stacking is needed before one begins, especially in terms of the step sizes and again I would urge Cognisys to consider adding a few pages to the worthy examples in the handbook to point the beginner in the right direction.
In summary, I took a long time deliberating over the purchase; I'm looking forward to getting more creativity out of my photography whilst using it; I got superb results from my second attempt; I think the product has potential.

Bernie - 2/10/2016 Very pleased with this kit. Well made; looks and feels robust. I've had a test run on my D750 tethered with Helicon remote and it's just want I wanted. I couldn't test with shutter cable because this company does yet stock it! I would have liked better instruction on how to use tethered.
Highly recommended.

Phaedra - 12/7/2015 The manual is badly written, the control box and display are primitive. It's like a schoolkid's first prototytpe. There are wasteful delays and you have to have odd extra exposures, and they have the backlash control WRONG! The linearity of the slides is mediocre, your camera will move in a helix. I'm expecting some competitor to bring out something better at half the price - but there's nothing out there yet..

roger - 3/29/2015 I spent a long time considering this (for me) expensive purchase. I am so glad I bought it as it is totally wonderful. I think you need some macro experience to really benefit from this, but it suddenly opens all sorts of possibilities.
