Studio flashes make it possible for photographers to completely determine the light themselves in their studio, or on location – inside or outside. After having to work with lights for years, the first studio flashes became available for the photographer in the fifties. And since then, these flash units tripod out with accessories to better influence the shape and quality of light and shadow.

Since similar useful accessories for reporter flashes became available to photojournalists, flashes became increasingly popular, where, until then, the high sensitivities of films and later film sensors often determined the trend. An important advantage of the flash was (and is) the improved focus and colour saturation compared to images in existing light and higher ISO setting. Compared to studio flashes from Godox, Metz and Multiblitz, among others, with their greater light output, reporter flashes have become more universal, but certainly not a replacement.

Shadow is sometimes beautiful, sometimes annoying

That's why there are light formers to prevent, for example, a portrait from appearing stuck to the background by a deep black 'core shadow'. Sometimes, moving the light sources can improve things a bit, often it takes too much time. By making the light source compared to the subject larger with an umbrella, soft box or beauty dish, the shade either disappears completely, or becomes a lot less deep black.

Good to know

Most studio flash units are Monobloc devices, such as reporter flash units built in a single case. Flash systems with separate lamp head and a unit with control panel plus connections are much more expensive, less flexible because of extra cables, and – except for large photo studios – less and less in use. Battery powered flash systems with separate lamps are popular professionally. We also offer similar battery options for single flash units, in order to flash faster consecutively and to increase the number of flashes. For extra comfort in the studio and on location, there are also wireless transmitters and receivers instead of flash cables.
