What is a selfie stick?

A selfie stick is a monopod stand specially designed to make a selfie from different angles, characterized by capturing a person near a known object. Since the introduction of the one-armed stick for the consumer the selfie stick quickly became the most widely used stand for photography with the phone. Although nowadays the majority of photos taken with a selfie stick are still captured with a smartphone, use with compact cameras and action cams has also increased considerably. You connect the smartphone or camera to the simple mounting bracket of the stick, then this can be connected via a cable or Bluetooth connection. With regard to dimensions, it is important to check whether the bracket supports the width of your camera. The weight at the tip of the selfie stick is heavier than at the top, this is intended to increase the stability when holding it and therefore prevent blurry photos. The maximum extension length of the sticks goes up to 2 meters, while many models can be extended to 50 to 100 centimeters.

Bluetooth or shutter release button control

Many selfie sticks are equipped with Bluetooth, so a connection can easily be made with a smartphone or compact camera. Via this wireless connection, it is possible to operate the recording button of the camera remotely. As a result, you can first calmly record the subject and get it positioned properly before you take the photo. Another possibility is to choose a selfie stick with a shutter release button control. Hereby the camera is connected to the stick via a cable and you can take a photo by pressing the button. So check properly which possiblity works best for you.

Suitable for various cameras

Selfie sticks are often used together with a smartphone, but the contemporary sticks can also work with certain separate cameras. Because some sticks have a screw connection and can therefore be connected to for instance a compact, GoPro or mirrorless camera.
