Eizo FlexScan EV2730Q-BK 27"
The Eizo EV2730Q is a wide screen monitor in square format with a unique 1920 x 1920 pixels. This resolution provides the user with 78% more pixels compared with a standard wide screen 1920 x 1080 monitor. The extended vertical space is convenient for displaying large amounts of information in long windows, reducing the need for excess scrolling and providing an efficient view of data.
This makes the monitor perfect for applications such as CAD or software development, because compared to standard wide monitors, more information is displayed on the entire screen. The anti-glare IPS panel ensures a great viewing angle. The ergonomically designed and height-adjustable stand with tilt and pivoting function ensures flexibility and thus, much comfort in use.

Superb for displaying photos and viewing documents
This monitor is absolutely ideal for displaying photos. I would say 75% of the photos I take are in portrait format, 25% in landscape format. I always thought that rotating a monitor in order to accommodate this was a silly, unworkable solution, and I am glad to see Eizo decided to agree. After having used one for a year already at home (brand new ex. display model bought directly from Eizo UK), I liked it so much that I now bought a second one from Photospecialist for my other computer as they offer it at a very competitive price.|
So after a year experience I can say that this is a truly great monitor for displaying photos. It covers 99% of sRGB, and calibration is also surprisingly good straight out of the box, as evidenced by the near identical profile obtained when I profile it myself with a DataColor Spyder4. If you are happy or willing to be restricted to sRGB for soft-proofing, this monitor is also great for photo editing.
Pretty much every other task I have done (web browsing, document viewing, word processing, worksheet editing, programming) has also benefitted from greatly enhanced productivity and ease of use with this square monitor format.
For watching movies, there exist other more appropriate monitors. Note the use of the word appropriate rather than better. In my opinion, general purpose monitors don’t come much better than this (yet).
The screen has the typical matte Eizo surface finish, which I personally greatly prefer over the glossy screens. Eizo’s matt surface coating is one of the best ones, which does not negatively affect pixel sharpness.
Viewing angles are good, and backlighting evenness is also good, but the Eizo ColorEdge range of monitors perform better here.
With EcoView switched off, and mode set to sRGB the profiling straight out of the box is surprisingly good. Set the OS colour manager to treat the monitor as an sRGB Device, and you are good to go. Custom calibrations can be usefully applied when the User1 or User2 modes are selected, but you will of course need to use a third-party screen calibration solution for that. The colour temperature of the monitor can be specified, or individual RGB gains can be set should you wish to do so.
The stand is typical Eizo, very sturdy with smooth and stable adjustments (height adjustment, horizontal swivel and vertical tilt). Thankfully, there is also about three degrees rotation left and right in order to level the screen or to align it in multiple monitor setups.
The speakers are pretty poor, O.K. for email notification and web browsing etc. but not much more.
Video connections are DVI and DisplayPort only. Note that whilst the full resolution is available through the DisplayPort connection, if you want to use the full resolution using the DVI port you will need a dual-link DVI-D connection on your computer. Also note that whilst the EV2730Q I bought from Eizo UK direct came with a DisplayPort to Mini-DisplayPort cable, the one from Photospecialist came with a cable with full DisplayPort connectors both ends. This may be a difference in configuration of box contents between monitors originally shipped to the UK vs. those to the continent (or 2015 vs. 2017 production).
Another noteworthy point is that (last year, 2017) the Eizo distributor in the UK informed that the Eizo warranty is a European-wide one, so the Eizo warranty for monitors bought on the continent will be honoured in the UK (for now). Beware though that the monitors from the continent most likely come with a Schuko European style earthed plug, as did mine. Photospecialist do throw an adapter in the box (very thoughtful!) but this does not feed though the earth connection. In order to apply with UK law, this monitor needs to be earthed as it does not show the double-insulated appliance symbol anywhere. Eizo also state that the monitor must be earthed. Fortunately, at the monitor end you will find the standard three-pin Euro connector, so the correct UK cable can easily be obtained (and if you are anything like me you will already have 10+ surplus of these in the house somewhere left over from other appliances).
