Decent all round camera for the price
The most impressive thing about this camera for me was the image stabilser, it's not why I bought it but after having used it for a few hours and gone through as many options and set ups as I can it's the one thing that really stood out. |
I have not used the WiFi elements like connecting it to a smart phone or router so I cannot comment on that.
The worst element was the night vision mode which is so sluggish it's not even worth using, it looks like a slow buffering youtube video whilst filming and on playback, like it's only using 5 frames a second or something HOWEVER there is a low light mode in the custom scene settings which almost makes up for it, I filmed in a very dark room which only had a child's night light as a light source and was very happy with the results.
There are plenty of options when trying to get the right look for the scenerio you are filming in, you can alter the white balance, brightness and contrast and focus etc.. also some nice combinations of functions like having manual brightness and white balance whilst keeping focus on automatic. It's very customizable and the menus, whilst having plenty of options, are quite easy to get around with a little use and familiarisation.
One great little feature is that you can select three options from the menus and put them on the view finder touch screen as shortcuts so they are right there when filming, quick and easy to access when needed, one little gripe here however is that there are a very limited number of things to choose from for example I can choose the built in LED light as a shortcut but I can't choose low light setting ( which I would prefer to use as the LED light gives a washed out look which isn't always appropriate ) While I can select back light compensation for filming in dim light I can't select white balance is another thing which would be useful as a shortcut. I'm actually finding fault here because all options can be found very quickly and set up quickly from the menu and so these gripes are not big thing really. But I knocked a star off the 'meets expectations' category because of these issues.
I use this camera for filming memories, christmas's, Birthdays, special days out etc it's also good for capturing spur of the moment things like my toddler son suddenly deciding to start dancing to some music he likes on the telly. On fully automatic you can just turn it on and start filming and it does a very good job most of the time and is ready to film in seconds, with a bit of time spent getting the right settings for your environment it does an excellent job, it is very easy to use and set up and I had no problems viewing any of the footage I took in any of the different formats AVCHD or MP4 back on my PC computer.
Really well thought out design except for the manual focus control being at the front of camera so it's difficult use during filming without the camera wobbling from it being turned, my previous camcorder had similar control but at the back of the device and meant there was no wobble at all from using it. Also I don't like the automatic lens cap as based on experience they tend to jam over time, and either won't shut, leaving the lens exposed all the time to dust or damage, or jams shut meaning you have to open it by hand by pushing the offending cover out of the way. Although in fairness this hasn't happened on this model and is a personal issue for me based on other makes and models.
despite some of the downsides I have highlighted here I really love this camera, It's a pleasure to use and does exactly what I need it to, also at the time of this review I am still getting used to some of the functions and the way the camera works, so it's hardly second nature yet. In summary I would recommend this camera, it an be very simple to use but also has a fairly high degree of customisation for the more advanced user. Perfectly suited to capturing the important moments in life.
