The Bresser Phase Contrast Set for the Science Infinity Microscope increases contrast as a function of the refractive index and thickness of the specimens. Colourless specimens with low contrast are especially suitable for this method. In most cases, this eliminates the need for staining. Typical examples for the application of phase contrast include epithelial cells of mucosal preparations, amoebae, or white blood cells in blood preparations. Bacteriële cells also stand out clearly without staining. Particularly useful for research on living cells, e.g. in cell culture / life sciences.
In phase contrast microscopy, contrast is increased at phase boundaries with special shields. Transitions between media with different refractive indices (e.g. water/cell plasma) are displayed as light-dark interference contrast. Background remains clear. One position of the Filter holder remains free. This means that the phase contrast set can also be used as bright-field condenser with iris diaphragm.
