L-Brackets

Mount your camera securely to your tripod with an L-bracket. An L-bracket is an L-shaped mounting plate that fixes the camera firmly to a tripod. The bracket doesn’t sit only beneath the camera — as a standard quick-release plate does — it also runs along the side of the body. That lets you mount the camera horizontally as well as vertically.

Which L-plate should you buy?

Every type of camera has a different L-bracket. It may even be that you have a different L-bracket per brand and type, so you certainly don't easily switch them between cameras. Because every camera has a unique L-bracket, you can still use all the functionality such as buttons properly.
An L-bracket is a part that you fix firmly to the camera, which you don't have to remove regularly. You can leave it on, even when you're photographing without a tripod. You only take the L-bracket off the camera when you want to clean it.
You mount the L-bracket to the tripod connection. Only you don't do this with a wing nut, but with a hex bolt. Because you need a hex key for this and the bracket clamps so firmly onto your body, you won't take it off again quickly. You can then click it into the tripod as you're used to.
