What is a monocular?

A monocular, also called a mono binocular, has the same purpose as a binocular pair. With a monocular you bring the image closer, so you can see the details better. Unlike a binocular pair, a monocular has only 1 eyepiece, so you also look through it with just 1 eye. Because you look through it with a single eye, depth is less than when you look through a standard binocular pair. An advantage, however, is that a monocular is often more compact and lighter.
