The normally unprotected front lens element is highly sensitive to light scattering, which is usually invisible to the naked eye but reduces the contrast, colour saturation, and vibrancy of the image. A lens hood, on the other hand, protects not only against side or backlight, but also against reflections, unwanted rain, and other unfavourable conditions.
