Prints toned with selenium have a subtle quality that no other type of toner can match; the Dmax is enhanced with a corresponding boost in print quality.

• Toxic – Must be handled in a well-ventilated area and treated as hazardous waste
• Multigrade Warmtone paper responds very well to selenium toners: using higher dilutions (e.g. 1+10, 1+20) produces a slight cooling of the image tone and a shift in hue towards red. At lower dilutions (e.g. 1+3, 1+5), a purple-brown hue may develop
• Cooler paper types respond more slowly, but still benefit from the highly effective deepening of maximum black and the broadening of the entire tonal range through selenium toning. The reaction of selenium with the silver halide (AgX) of the print hardens the adhesion of the image to the paper. This improves the chemical stability of the print, as well as its durability and archival properties, and also determines its appearance
• At a standard dilution of 1+3, the capacity of the toning solution is at least 25 sheets of 20.3 x 25.4 cm (8 x 10 inch) per litre
• Solutions at normal working strength are typically stable for up to 6 months in full, well-sealed bottles, 1 month in half-full, well-sealed bottles, and up to 7 days in an open tray
