Tips on choosing the right binoculars

There are many different binoculars suitable for birdwatchers. It is nice to know for yourself what to look for. For example, you can choose between binoculars with 10x magnification and those with 8x magnification. With 10x magnification, you are extra close to the bird. A disadvantage is that a steady hand is required, otherwise you will have a shaky image. In general, 8x magnification is also sufficient for bird watching. So the choice between 8x or 10x magnification is a personal preference. So it is best to test this yourself.

Where and when you go bird watching is important to factor into your choice of binoculars. Do you often want to look for the early birds? Then choose binoculars with a twilight number above 18. When choosing your binoculars, also keep in mind that a forest is often darker than an open field. So adjust the twilight figure accordingly.

The twilight figure is calculated as follows: multiply the diameter of the lens by the magnification factor and take the square root of this number. An example: an 8X40 binocular has a twilight number of 17.9.
