A gorillapod is a flexible and small tripod that can be clamped to different objects, with three legs. This makes this type of tripod ideal for photography from a wide variety of angles. The gorillapod was launched on the market in 2006 by the American company JOBY and grew within a few years to become an important player in the range of tripods on offer. Thanks to its unique construction and light weight, the tripod is mainly used for creative photography, but can also be used for professional purposes.
The gorillapod is built up from three legs with separate ball joints which are provided with a rubber casing. Thanks to these ball joints, the tripod can easily be clamped to various objects. For instance, from the side of a lantern pole a particular image can be recorded. Due to this flexibility, the gorillapod is suitable for experimenting with photography from various angles. In order to increase the stability, these tripods are equipped with rubber feet, a pleasant addition especially for the heavier cameras. Thanks to the rubber feet, the gorillapod can also be easily clamped to unstable bases.
The lightweight gorillapods are not limited to supporting the compact cameras and action cams, but can also be used for the heavier mirrorless and SLR cameras. Up to a weight as much as 4kg, these tripods ensure a professional experience and they offer constant performances. With the attached ball head, a heavy camera with a lens can be connected to the tripod. For these models, the stability of the recordings can also be enlarged by allowing the bendable legs to lean against the tummy.
There is a large player active in the area of gorillapods: the American company JOBY. As well as tripods, they also offer other accessories, including camera straps and phone holders. JOBY has marketed various gorillapods, for use with various types of cameras. The original and magnetic models are small and versatile models and suitable for the lightweight action cams and compact cameras. The hybrid models go up to one kilo and can therefore carry certain SLR, range finder and mirrorless cameras. As the name already suggests, the SLR zoom has no problem with being able to carry video cameras and SLR cameras with accompanying lenses. Finally, for the very demanding photographer, there are the focus models, which can bear a weight up to 6 kilo. The offer by JOBY is expanded on a regular basis and is no longer limited to just models for the photographer starting out and to support for lightweight cameras.
