All about DAB+ radio
What is DAB+ radio?
Digital Audio Broadcasting, or DAB, is the way to listen to radio stations via digital technology. Although the system was introduced as early as 1993, its popularity has increased considerably in recent years. This is partly due to active campaigns in the media and the unparalleled noiseless sound quality. In the long run, this way of radio listening will completely replace the old FM radio. After the introduction of the DAB radio, the system has been overhauled considerably and with the current DAB+ more frequency space is donated to the radio stations.
How does DAB+ work?
DAB works with various technologies to provide the highest possible listening quality. Dab+ mainly uses MPEG4/AAC+ encryption, which also achieves excellent sound quality at low bit rates. The different radio stations that transmit via the digital line are bundled into one system at a fixed frequency. These are then split up by the radio receiver. This significantly increases the sound quality compared to FM radio, in addition, DAB radio is crackle and noise-free. To set up the radio stations, you can perform an autoscan via a DAB radio, after which the transmitters can be found in the system by name.
Coverage area and transmitter offer
Of course, it is important that you can fully enjoy the quality offered by DAB radio. The DAB radio coverage area is therefore a lot larger than that of FM radio. For the national stations, there is a coverage of 95% in the Netherlands and Flanders. This allows you to use DAB radio on all major highways and you can also use the station offer at home.
DAB radio's big advantage is the range of channels, which has expanded considerably in recent years. In addition to the national commercial and public broadcasters, regional broadcasters can also be received. As with FM radio, the influence of weather conditions and buildings still plays a role in the reception quality. In addition, the quality of the receiver and antenna determines the final sound quality.
Additional features
In addition to the advantages of the wide range of digital channels, DAB radios offer even more features. The radios can receive and display more information in the display. In addition to the artist and the title, think of the name of the album, the playing time and information about the song. On the road in the car, improved traffic information can give a more up-to-date picture of the situation on the road.
In our range of DAB radios, you will also find models that offer the possibility to listen to music via Bluetooth or music services such as Spotify. So you have more options, and you can switch between radio and your own music. Home systems also often contain a clock, alarm and alarm clock.
