Maintain equipment regularly

A camera is a product that you should handle with care. This also includes maintenance of various components. Maintenance on the lens, image sensor, screen and lenses must therefore be done regularly. We explain these different parts and the products that you can use below.

Cleaning the lens

The lens is one of the defining parts of a camera's ability to take high-quality images. When dirt gets stuck on on the lens, it affects the final result of a photo. There are therefore numerous cleaning materials that keep the lens in optimal shape. Microfibre cloths are often used to quickly remove dust while an air pump is used to blow away unwanted dirt. For stubborn dirt, it is advisable to use the microfibre cloth in combination with a few drops of cleaning agent. Thanks to the softness of the cloth, you can easily soak dirt off of the lens in this way. A third option is a so-called lens pen, which is used to remove dirt such as dust and fingerprints from the lens.

Dirt on the camera

Unfortunately, cameras quickly get dirty on the outside during long journeys and frequent use in rainy conditions. By using a camera bag, you can easily protect the camera against dirt. Make sure that you regularly wipe the bag with a damp cloth. You can easily wipe the camera itself with a microfibre cloth, possibly with some water. Sand is best removed with a simple cotton swab. Do this quickly, because grains of sand can damage the lens and sensor.

Cleaning the image sensor

If there are still spots on the image after cleaning the lens, there may be dust on the image sensor. Fortunately, many cameras have a built-in cleaning mode. This is easy to activate via the camera menu, after which the dust particles are released by small vibrations. If this is not enough, you can clean the sensor with a sensor cloth and some cleaning agent. Another option is to use a lens pen or air pump. Always read the instruction booklet that came with the camera, so that you know how to properly open the sensor.

Changing lenses and keeping them clean

When changing lenses, dirt can get into the camera and on the sensor. Try to perform this operation quickly, so that it is exposed to the outside air for as short a time as possible. The lens itself should be maintained regularly with frequent use. This can be done by using a microfibre cloth, air pump and swab. Make sure to clean each part carefully and gently.
