Description
The Sigma SD Quattro is an APS-C format system camera with a 29 MP Foveon X3 sensor (similar to a standard 39 MP sensor) and a dust and splash proof magnesium body. This Foveon sensor has three layers (red, green and blue), that make for unprecedented rich images: in tone, gradation, and in detail. Your photos will be of a unique quality. The SD Quattro uses both phase detection and contrast detection, which makes for an exceptionally fast and reliable autofocus.
The dual LCD screen on the back ensures total focus on the image, as the main image information is always visible. SIGMAs new Super Fine Detail Mode combines seven different exposures in one click in a photo (images can be edited separately), which allows getting the most from the Foveon Quattro sensor. That is already stunning as a standard. The maximum speed of the SD Quattro is 3.6 fps. You can thereby shoot 14 pictures in RAW format until the buffer is full. The camera has an ISO range of 100 to 6400 and the electronic viewfinder contains 2.36 million pixels.

Foveon X3 Image Sensor
The Foveon X3 direct image sensor uses the excellent light absorbing properties of silicon, divided into three layers, in which each layer gets one of the colors assigned. It is the only sensor that provides vertical color separation and thus is the world's only direct image sensor. The Foveon X3 direct image sensor makes it superfluous to have a low pass filter to prevent interference color, which gives unprecedented detail to the image. The sensor has a pixel ratio of 1:1:4 in the lower, middle and top layer and adjusts the brightness data of the top layer to the middle and bottom layer. This unique structure ("Quattro") allows for a quick resolution and high-speed data processing.
New Exposure Mode
The Super-Fine Detail exposure mode gets the absolute maximum out of the Foveon sensor. With the one press of a button a picture is made where in the EXIF data from a X3i file seven different exposures to be read as separate data are stored. You can then with the SIGMA Photo Pro software, create low-noise images with a huge dynamic range. With this option the detailed image potential of the Quattro Foveon X3 sensor is used optimally.
