With a lens hood you prevent too much sunlight from entering your lens. When shooting in bright sunlight, the reflection in your lens can overexpose your images. Also, backlighting causes lens flare in your photos. You can prevent this with a lens hood. A lens hood blocks the light in the right places, without the lens hood appearing in your photos.
